John McCain-We are not the president's subordinates
During his speech on the Senate floor today, Senator John McCain made clear that he and his fellow Republican and Democratic senators do not work for President Donald Trump.
McCain is quoted as saying, “We are not the president’s subordinates. We are his equals.”
Senator McCain also let it be known that he isn’t in favor of building the wall that Trump made a center piece of his campaign and goal as president: “We don’t hide behind walls. We breach them,” said McCain.
The senator’s comments came after he cast the vote to help place the Republicans in a position to get through the motion to proceed to the floor to debate the healthcare bill.
Prior to the motion being passed, Trump was on Twitter threatening to unseat Republicans who do not support the bill.
On Sunday, Trump tweeted, “If Republicans don’t Repeal and Replace the disastrous Obamacare, the repercussions will be far greater than any of them understand?”
McCain, who’s stressed that both sides must work together to get the healthcare bill passed, took more subtle shots at Trump.
McCain expressed concern not only about Trump trying to make the White House an extension of his family business by giving his children jobs they aren’t qualified to perform, but also about Trump’s bullying and bombastic behavior.
While expressing his concern, McCain reminded his fellow Senators that America is a democracy and not an oligarchy like Russia or an autocratic government like Syria.
McCain said, “Our system doesn’t depend on our nobility. It accounts for our imperfections and gives us an order to our individual strivings that has helped make ours the most powerful and prosperous society on Earth. It is our responsibility to preserve that and even when it requires us to do something less satisfying than winning; even when we must give a little to get a little; even when our efforts manage just three yards in a cloud of dust while critics on both sides denounce us for timidity for our failure to triumph.”
McCain told his fellow senators that if they want to succeed on big issues like healthcare then they must reach across the aisle and stop listening to the “loud bombastic” folks on the on-line and off-line who used the divisions between Americans in order to make their money.
The Senator went on to say that the only achievement they have is getting Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, which was done on party lines, and if they don’t place their prides and egos aside then the Senate will continue to be fractured; leaving big issues like healthcare dead on arrival.
